Recently on a day out on the water with a mate, the topic of tow vehicles came up during our normal banter and chit chat. During our conversation, we agreed that there are many suitable candidates on the market these days. However, there are 4 points that you should definitely look for in any tow vehicle.
1. 5 Star ANCAP Safety Rating
Nothing is more important than your own safety. Basically, with technology these days in motor vehicles there is no excuse for manufactures not creating a safe vehicle. After all, if you are involved in an incident you want your passengers and you to come out alive.
2. 400nm of Torque
When pulling a trailer or driving a fully loaded car, having sufficient power to get you going is essential. There is nothing worse than not being able to accelerate up a reasonable incline or take off easily at a set of lights. In fact, having power is also a safety aspect as well in some situations.
3. Three Tonne Towing Capacity
Having a decent towing capacity is another important part to consider. It is unusual now for dual cab utes and larger 4WD’s to not tow around the three-tonne mark, however having such a rating means that the vehicle is designed to handle the load. Heavier suspension and stronger chassis usually go hand in hand with a larger towing capacity.
4. 6 Speed Gear Box
For passenger comfort, mechanical sympathy and fuel economy, a minimum of a six-speed gear box should be considered for modern vehicles. This also gives you more control over your rev range which can come in handy on steep climbs and descents as well as saving you money at the service station.
