Free advice! Anyone who’s never heard of the Evans Fishing Classic, check it out. For anyone who’s heard of it but has never been, get yourself to it next year! Held in the beautiful little coastal village of Evans Head (30minutes south of Ballina) in July, it is such a fantastic event and is quickly turning into one of the East Coast’s biggest (and best) fishing events. Featuring information talks, kid’s games, kids fishing clinics, a live fish display tank, jumping castle, food and drink stalls, tackle displays, nightly prize giveaways, a prize pool of over $100,000 (including 2x boat packages!) and a week-long fishing tournament for all sorts of estuary, beach and offshore species.
One of the great parts about this event is the community atmosphere. The whole town gets right behind the event, and genuinely make the event better for it. 2017 saw a new format for the event, changing to the sustainable catch, measure, photograph and release style of competition. This format was well received and ensures fish stocks remain high for years to come.
Prizes were available for champion men, women, cadets, junior and teams, with individual species prizes being awarded for the longest 3 fish in each species category. With over 700 anglers vying for the prizes this year, the competition area was extended from Byron Bay to Yamba, to ensure plenty of fish for all.
The weather this year round was beautiful. Mostly clear, sunny skies, small seas and light winds resulted in good captures in all divisions, with many amazing catches witnessed.
